Skyview Unit Release Paths
Skyview Unit is a Texas Department of Criminal Justice Correctional Institutions Division facility. TDCJ, not the Cherokee County Sheriff, controls movement and release. A person may fully discharge a sentence, leave under parole or mandatory supervision, transfer to another TDCJ unit, enter a required program, or move to another authority. Only an actual release or discharge status establishes departure from state custody.
A favorable parole decision can be conditional. Some Board of Pardons and Paroles vote codes tie approval to a future date, treatment program, or prerelease step. A move out of Skyview may therefore be an internal transfer rather than community release. Follow the TDCJ number across units and inspect the exact status and date labels.
Confirm a Skyview Unit Release
The TDCJ online inmate search is primarily a current-inmate tool, but it is the correct first channel for Skyview custody, projected dates, and parole-review information. The seven-digit TDCJ number is the strongest search key. A SID number is also useful. Name-only results require careful matching.
- Open the TDCJ inmate search and enter the TDCJ or SID number when known.
- If searching by name, enter last and first name. Use gender and race only to distinguish plausible matches.
- Open the detail and record the check time, current facility, offense, county of conviction, and exact date labels.
- Read parole-review information separately from custody status. A vote or eligibility date is not an actual release date.

Skyview Unit Release Date Fields
TDCJ detail records can present several dates with different legal functions. Do not collapse them into one promised release day. Capture each label as displayed and check the current record again when release nears.

A projected release date is not a completed release. For legally eligible older offenses, it can operate through mandatory-supervision rules. For later qualifying offenses, discretionary mandatory supervision may require BPP approval. If release is denied or the person is ineligible, the projection can align with discharge. Sentence changes, detainers, credit corrections, discipline, and BPP action can alter the path.

The profile confirms that Skyview is a state facility. Its presence in Cherokee County does not make its offender and release records county records.
TDCJ describes Skyview as a co-gender inpatient mental-health unit co-located with Hodge. These facts describe the institution, not a release schedule. No public release time, pickup point, or family waiting procedure was established in the research.

The unit switchboard can route general institutional questions, but it does not replace the statewide offender search or TDCJ public-information channel. Staff may not disclose individual movement or treatment details. Use the TDCJ number when contacting the appropriate records office.

For basic inmate information about an old record, email pia@tdcj.texas.gov. Supply the full name and seven-digit TDCJ number. If that number is unknown, provide the exact date of birth, or approximate age and county of conviction. Ask for incarceration history, actual release or discharge date and type, and whether the person left to parole, mandatory supervision, or full discharge.
TDCJ lists no charge for its basic email information service and says that channel does not provide inmate photographs or Social Security numbers. A broader Public Information Act request can specify the TDCJ or SID number, commitment episode, time sheet when appropriate, and final release type.
Skyview Unit Parole Release Decisions
Parole is conditional release from prison under TDCJ Parole Division supervision. Mandatory supervision is a distinct statutory release path. Both differ from county probation, which is imposed by a court. Eligibility only opens the possibility of parole consideration; it does not establish approval or physical departure.

After actual release, verify the assigned parole office. Cherokee County is cross-referenced to Tyler District Parole Office, but approved residence, a specialized caseload, or reassignment may point elsewhere.
Which Rusk Release Record?
Rusk city contains several institutions under different custodians. Cherokee County Jail is operated by the Sheriff. Skyview and Hodge form a co-located TDCJ state complex. Meanwhile, Rusk County is a separate Texas county. A search that shows only “Rusk” can therefore lead to the wrong record system.
Match the operator and identifier. A Cherokee County Jail booking uses the sheriff release transaction and local cause number. A Skyview record uses a TDCJ or SID number and statewide offender detail. The TDCJ unit directory identifies the state institution. Do not assign a facility to Cherokee County merely because a table contains the word Rusk in a county or city column.
A transfer from Cherokee County Jail into TDCJ produces two custody stages. The Sheriff transaction documents when county custody ended. TDCJ documents prison intake, location, projected dates, parole review, and eventual release or discharge. Keeping both records prevents a county handoff from being described as community release.
Skyview Unit and Hodge Transfers
Skyview is co-located with Hodge Unit at the same address and telephone number. Hodge is identified as a Developmental Disabilities Program unit. A movement between these or other TDCJ units can reflect treatment, classification, programming, or release preparation. It is not proof that the person left state custody.
Follow the TDCJ number rather than the street address. The current-facility field can change while the sentence record remains active. If a favorable vote requires a program, a transfer may be part of satisfying that condition. Confirm actual release status through the offender record and, when needed, Review and Release Processing.
People housed at Skyview can originate from any Texas county. Cherokee County clerks may have no related case, and the Sheriff may have no local booking. Search the county of conviction shown in the TDCJ record for the judgment rather than assuming the case belongs in Rusk.
Note: Sharing an address with Hodge does not make a Skyview transfer a release; the TDCJ custody status controls that distinction.
Released Skyview Unit Offender Records
An old discharged person may disappear from the current-inmate web search because the tool is primarily designed for current custody. Absence is not enough to establish a date or release type. TDCJ’s email information route is the official fallback for incarceration history and discharge details.
Ask whether the person left to parole, mandatory supervision, or full discharge. Those outcomes differ. Parole and mandatory supervision carry TDCJ supervision conditions after prison custody, while full discharge generally marks completion of that sentence obligation. Another detainer or authority can still affect physical custody, so follow any receiving-agency information.
